CHREAA AND SALC ENGAGES PARLIAMENT ON PRISON FOOD SHORTAGES

On 14th November 2022, the Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) and Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) met the Social and Community Affairs Committee of Parliament in Malawi for their Budgetary Mid-Review Session which commenced in the afternoon hours. The Committee summoned the Ministry of Homeland Security, Prisons and Treasury to discuss the food shortage in prisons and find a long-lasting solution.

In the past three months before the meeting, there had been food shortages in the country’s prisons, forcing the authorities to turn to rationing. This greatly affected inmates on ART and Tuberculosis treatment.
